Portumna is one of County Galway's most attractive towns and is ideally situated by the River Shannon and Lough Derg to avail of all the attractions these fine waters have to offer. Portumna Forest Park provides another welcome amenity to this important market town, for its mile long sign-posted trail guides you through a marvelous world of common and exotic trees.
Portumna is a small village and has a population of about 1,500 living souls.  Portumna has 11 Pubs. This section of this site features 5 of the Pubs with a promise of more to come. The pub in Ireland is a social focal point. There are many Irishmen and women that patronize the pubs that do not drink. However, I might add that I am not one of those. I do partake of the living water. There are also two 2 Churches. The Church of Ireland and St. Brigid's Catholic Church. One old 12th century Abby. Two groceries stores, two butcher shops. Two Chemist Shops (Pharmacies). Four petrol (gas) stations and lots of wonderful restaurants. Portumna has a Castle that was owned by the Clanricarde family. It is under renovation at this writing and visitors are welcome. Portumna has it's own Garda (Police) Station. The Shannon Oaks hotel can accommodate visitors and also has a recreation area as well as chalets (cottages) to rent. There are numerous Bed and Breakfasts all over Portumna and the surrounding area. Portumna has it's own golf course and restaurant. We have rented a cottage about 1.5 miles outside of Portumna in a community called Oldthort. It is called Green Acres and it has two cottages, bed and breakfast and a nine hole golf course along with a pitch and put and a shuffleboard. Mike and Aggie Walsh's are the proprietors and are wonderful people. Aggie is always sending Mike down to the guest cottages with homemade scones. The Walsh's are always willing to give you a lift into town. We became fast friends and cherish their friendship. They have a  six children, all are professional, either married and living away from home
